A new beginning in Queensland
Opening a new studio in another state requires some level of bravery, however watching the flood crisis unfold in Queensland knowing your new studio is located beside the Brisbane river has definitely taken my faith to a new level.
I was prepared for the worst however since the studio was located on higher ground we were thankfully unaffected but as we’ve all seen over the past week, the devastation caused by this flood has been felt far and wide and our hearts go out to everyone who’s lives have been affected.
I was a bit hesitant to write this blog since it’s hard to talk about new beginnings when the world seems out of control, but I decided to push through anyway as I wanted to share my feelings about the fear and excitement that comes with anything new. Since sharing my news about the expansion on social media I have been flooded with lots of messages but there has been one question that seems to be the most popular. “So does that mean you are moving to Brisbane?”. The short answer is no, my family our home our life is here in Sydney, the Lane Cove studio will be open as normal we are simply taking the next step and challenging ourselves (and myself) to grow. The second most popular question is “Why Brisbane?” And my reply is “why not?”. During the two years of COVID life I noticed a trend with our clients and a lot of families were moving to Queensland. And I could totally understand why. Just like thousands of other families we made the transition of working from home so why not do it in a warm sunny place by the sea in Queensland? Made perfect sense to me! So, since we couldn’t move there ourselves, I decided to open a studio in Brisbane. What was once a dream floating around in my mind quickly became a reality when I fell in love with the charming Queenslander in Hawthorne and now, I am in the biggest race of my life to complete the renovations in time to celebrate our official opening on the 26th of April 2022. (Which you are all invited to by the way!) And just to add to the excitement of this whole story, the date of the opening also marks the exact day that I opened my first studio in Leichhardt 15 years ago. Pretty cool huh!
If you’re still reading on, I’d love to share something that only my nearest and dearest know about me as it ties into my theme of new beginnings. In 2006 I was engaged to be married to my partner of 5 years, to cut a long story short we were due to get married in November of that year and one month before the wedding he called it quits. If you’ve ever had to “undo” a wedding it can be traumatic as it literally felt like I was living my worst nightmare. As with all breakups it was difficult but there was a point where I had reached a fork in the road.
Option 1: push through the pain and try to start another relationship (HECK NO) or Option 2: Use the pain as constructive energy, focus on my passion, and open a photography studio (MORE SENSIBLE OPTION MARIE).
When I made the decision to focus on my career there was no stopping me, I literally used all the disappointment and heartache as my driving force and what came out of my pain was the most beautiful thing I could have ever imagined. It took me 5 months from the initial thought to opening my doors to a future unknown and that was 15 years ago! I am so glad I took that leap of faith because it has brought me to this moment of opening another beautiful studio.
So I guess the moral of the story is new beginnings are definitely scary but take the step anyway. I have a quote on my wall at home that says “Feel the fear and do it anyway” by Julian Anne Belle from the Voice. I love that quote so much because you JUST don’t know what is on the other side of your journey especially when you are blinded by fear and doubt. I never thought heartache would lead me to where I am now but gosh am I grateful!
So here I am again testing my bravery levels unsure of what the future holds but I am determined to see what is on the other side. If you’ve read this far there must be a message for you in this too so let’s, be brave together!
Stay tuned for my next blog as I make another trip to Brisbane shortly to see how the renovations are progressing and I’d love to give you a little sneak peek! Exciting times ahead for both of us xx
